Besom/Broom Folklore Part 2

Witches riding around on broomsticks comes from a agricultural fertility rite, where the women rode around the fields (like on a hobby horse), with the broom between their legs, hoping to bring the farmers a good harvest. However on a warm moonlit night you may be lucky to see us flying about, just for fun. ðŸ˜‰

New brooms bring good luck and so they make excellent housewarming presents. Tie a piece of red ribbon around it for protection.

If a bride and groom hold hands and jump over a broom, their marriage will be full of good luck and fortune. We still jump the broomstick during our Handfasting ceremonies. This is a symbol of fertility.

If newlyweds enter their new home by stepping over a broom, luck will follow them.

If a broom falls in your home unwelcome company will come to visit you.

Brooms and besoms are used in ritual for cleansing the general circle or ritual area. The besom is sweeping away the psychic dirt, getting the area purified for the ritual at hand. The sweeping also helps to quiet the mind and narrow the focus for the witch to begin the ritual.

Besoms are used by witches to indicate to other witches that they are at home, or working magic, by placing it outside the door. This is not to say that anyone who has a kitchen broom sitting outside their door is a witch.

I keep my besom by the door, to protect my home from unwanted outside energies.
