There are two varieties of stones named sunstone. The first is a translucent crystal of the labradorite family with a deep yellow almost orange-ish hue. This stone is known as the Oregon Sunstone and it can also be found in other colors such as pink, light red, deep red, green and blue. The Oregon Sunstone is sometimes referred to as the Oregon Diamond because it has a hardness of 6.2 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale. The Oregon Sunstone was declared Oregon ’s state gemstone in 1987. There is also one other stone that sometimes is confused with sunstone and that is a man-made gem called the goldstone.

 

The other type of sunstone is a feldspar found and imported from India . This stone resembles an orange opal with a fiery, multicolored flash. This is the only stone of the two varieties known to have been used in magic in the past.

 

Where Scott Cunningham talks about finding the feldspar variety of sunstone at a gemstone, I myself have had a chance to find the Oregon Sunstone at a Gem Show and bought some myself. They have a wonderful, vibrant energy to them.

 

During the Renaissance, this stone was frequently associated with the sun due to its orange-gold colors. Magicians would wear this stone set in gold to bring the powers of the sun to them when working magic.

 

Until the 1800’s, sunstone was a hard to find, rare and expensive. In 1831 it was discovered along the Selenga River in Siberia . Prior to discovering the major vein, local merchants & residents would collect Sunstone pebbles from the Selenga riverbed. Some fairly sizable deposits of Sunstone are found in Siberia , large enough to be carved into vases & bowls. Before the Siberian discovery, Sunstone was found in only one location, on Sattel Island in the White Sea . During the 1950’s Sunstone was found in Norway at Tvedestrand. Here the gemstone is embedded in a white Quartz with the finest specimens being located in the center, often surrounded by inferior Sunstone that is cut away. The Norwegian Sunstones are considered the most perfect in the world.
